My mum and the Philippines

My mum in the Philippines
Me and my mum in the Philippines.

My mum moved to the UK in search of better opportunities. She was born one of thirteen children into a farming family in the Philippines. Since moving to London in the 70's she has worked hard as a nurse while raising four kids (with my wonderful dad) and is now a grandmother.

The Philippines is the most beautiful country I have ever visited. I spent a lot of time there as a child, spending lengths of time during my school summer holidays playing in the monsoon rain, riding in the family jeepney soaking up the tropical heat and vibrant culture. Filipinos are alive - singing, laughing, cooking in the streets, often roasting baboy (pig) and tuc tucs beeping through traffic. Filipino's innate resourcefulness is so inspiring, and I completely get where my mum's love of hoarding comes from.

Scenery in the Philippines

The village where my mum grew up in the Philippines.

The experience and memories of my summers in the Philippines, coupled with growing up as the daughter of an immigrant, have had a huge influence on my work and ambitions as a designer. My appreciation of environment and colour, influenced by the vibrant culture of the Philippines, inspires my print designs. The desire to build my own brand, and the work ethic required to do so, come from watching my mother.
